People in today’s society are more likely than ever to pay attention to their health and physical fitness. Specifically, people are more interested than ever in carving their bodies to the Adonis-like figures. This has resulted in the advent of a new genre of exercise centers that give a place for health conscious people to congregate and work on their bodies.

There are many products available on the market that supposedly can help you shape, tone, or define seemingly any muscle or muscle group you could possibly want to work out, and we see these products hyped up all over TV. Contrary to what they tell you, these exercises are not the only way to get the body you want. If you are able to strictly stick to certain healthy foods, you will be able to achieve some of the same results as if you worked out every day.

Your nutrition is just as important as exercise to your health. Your diet must be tailored to a program that helps your muscles rebuild themselves after your lengthy workouts and is essential to reaching your body’s peak performance. Because of the increasing trend of people being conscious of their health, many plans and regiments have been devised to help people get slim. We have all seen how many diets are out there and how ridiculous they can get, but how are you supposed to know which one will work best for you?

If you’d like to get healthy, you might want to try either a high-carb diet or a high-fat diet. Each diet focuses on taking in high amounts of each of the material their name suggests. High carbohydrate programs make use of glycogen kept within your liver and muscle proteins. Glycogen is a complex sugar which gives high levels of power to be used in non-aerobic workouts.

High fat programs are known for providing its followers with a large amount of calories. The regiment requires the person to consume 250% of the usual amount of calories. This is effective because research has shown that the body burns eight times as many calories metabolizing carbohydrates than it does metabolizing fats. How do you know which is best for you? Whichever one you choose to concentrate on, you must take in a low amount of the other (high fat-low carbohydrate). Otherwise, you’ll end up gaining a ton of weight, which is the opposite of what we’re trying to do!

Proper nutrition focuses not only on losing weight, but keeping a healthy body once the weight has gone. It has been shown that you can only keep the pounds off if you can find a nutrition program that is healthy and suits what you like to eat and how you live your life.

Even though there are many different diets that can help you lose weight, in the long run, you’ll be happier and feel better if you can find a nutrition program that you like. As with almost everything else, once you find the proper program, you must continue to eat in moderation, and don’t allow yourself to eat the same thing all the time. Make sure you’re getting enough of the essential nutrients and materials that your body needs to run well. The information about what nutrients are essential to your body is available on the internet.

Low fat and lots of carbohydrates or low carbohydrates and lots of fat; this is the question you have to ask yourself when deciding which diet is for you. Getting into shape doesn’t have to be an arduous and painful process, it can be a fun adventure with numerous benefits down the road. It will give you an opportunity to explore and discover the world of food in a way you never thought you would.

Even though you probably have a hectic schedule, making exercise a top priority is essential to living a balanced and healthy life. At the end of the day, contributing thirty minutes to better yourself is not too much to ask. Thirty minutes is one television show. How easy would it be to give up 1 television show if you could see all the benefits you’ll gain. If you can’t stand missing some television, get up a 30 minutes earlier and run or lift weights. If you try hard enough, you’ll be able to make the time.

It is possible to make time to exercise. There are many people in the world who take the time to make themselves and their fitness a priority. The perfect body is attainable if you give yourself the time.

This is why the people who strive to be top fitness models usually tend to be some of the healthiest and most attractive models in the industry. They work hard and focus themselves on being the perfect image of fitness. If someone is going to be a model of fitness, they must be perfect in every way.

In truth, anyone who is dedicated and able to endure rigorous workouts has the physical ability to become a fitness model. These strenuous workouts prepare and tone your body to illustrate for the world how a body can look at the peak of its training.

Now that you know anyone can be a fitness model, here are some helpful hints to help you on your way to achieve your dreams.

1. Don’t believe anybody when they say that fitness modelling is entirely about fitness.

Society generally focuses on certain characteristics for men and women. Women are admired when their figure is thin and toned while the ideal man has big, rippling muscles and a strong physique.

The upside of this is that most individuals put most of their effort into exercise not for the purpose of being healthier and fitter than they used to be but because they want to see their names in faces on television, movies, and magazines.

In order to become a fitness model, you must begin working out and becoming a healthier person in general instead of just working out to become more attractive and trying to “look like” a fitness model.

The truth is that being classically bigger and stronger doesn’t necessarily mean you will be a successful fitness model.

2. Understand that your nutrition is one of the most important parts of the job

In order to become a bona fide fitness model, you must understand the idea that your body will become what it takes in. Above and beyond that, it also shows how you live your life in terms of how often you partake in working out.

Therefore, if you don’t believe this and live by it, you will undoubtedly realize that it is near impossible to become a model without proper nutrition, and you will become a model of how NOT to eat.

3. Live an active life

You genetics will play a big role in how your body looks, but without the proper nutrition, there’s nothing that your body can do to look good, and the way you live your life might be able to be shown through.

Therefore, even with a constructive diet and strong eating habits, an active lifestyle is essential to your goal of being a fitness model.

4. Confidence is key

To become a top-level fitness model, you must be confident in yourself and you must project that to the world. You must be willing to able to show off what you have at a moments notice despite anything thats going on in your personal life or how anything else is going.

Just like the Bible says, you should not covet what your neighboy has. You shouldn’t be looking around and feeling dejected if there are bigger or stronger people out there. Love what you have and be confident.

A positive outlook on yourself will give you the confidence you need to achieve your dreams, which shows other people that they must respect you and hire you for modelling shoots.

The characteristics of a good fitness model is more than just a good body. The most important part of a fitness model is their lifestyle and how they live their life, because a constructive outlook in these areas will show itself in your work.

If you’re is about to begin a fitness regiment, you should understand how essential warm-up stretches and other exercises are in avoiding injury and reaching your maximum potential during the workout. Aside from being diligent with your stretches, there are also a number of other things you must remember in order to get the most out of your exercises. Here are a few.

1. In order to improve flexibility and maximize range of motion, you must stretch both pre- and post-workout. It is common knowledge that you must stretch before working out, but it is more rare for people to know that they must stretch after their exercises to develop their flexibility when their muscles have already had a workout.

2. It is important to hold your stretches for a minute for them to achieve maximum effectiveness. While warming up, twenty seconds is call for, but if you increase your stretch time to sixty seconds, you are able to stretch your muscles so that they’ll be more flexible in the future.

3. When stretching, do your stretches a couple times before moving on to the next. Avoid doing anything just once. Avoid this bouncing motion that many people are prone to doing during their stretches. Keep yourself stretched for a short duration of time, and then relax. Do this over and over again. If you were to bounce during your stretches, you may risk injury to your joints and tendons.

4. Be diligent with your exercises. Make sure to do them correctly so that you get the maximum use from each of them.

5. Be sure to warm up your entire body. Many different muscle groups are used during each activity, and you don’t want to neglect one. One examples is that people often neglect working out their neck, even if they are gym rats. The simplest and most effective neck stretch is pushing against your forehead and stretching backward. Repeat this on both the sides of the head as well as the back.

6. Make sure not to neglect your stretches during the week. Taking a few days or weeks off can make all of your hard work dramatically disappear if you aren’t careful.

7. Know your body when doing any of your work outs. There is no reason to risk an injury and force yourself to perform an exercise that you know you are incapable of. Raise your levels in small increments. Some days, your body will tell you that it isn’t up to a certain exercise or level of weights. Back off and come back to fight another day.

8. Rest is essential for your body. Your body needs to rest during the intermissions of sets as well as for a few days sometimes. This helps your muscles recover strength and power. Rotate which muscles you work on different days. Never do the same exercise 2 days in a row. Muscles grow when they are resting, not when they are being worked.

9. Do not neglect cardiovascular exercises to strengthen your circulatory system, including your heart. These are exercises that help workout your heart muscle and increase its ability to pump blood to the body. Running is the most common aerobic exercise.

10. Bring an MP3 player to the gym to help take your focus off the pain and give you something else to think about. Any type of music is fine, but make sure the player is ok at the gym and won’t break.

Apart from the enhanced performance benefits, stretching is also said to be a good remedy for stress and a good release for the rest of the body.

Probably the easiest and safest methods of bringing down a person’s level of blood sugar, reduce the potential developing heart disease, and improve a person’s general health is to get themselves involved in a workout regiment. In this world of ever-increasing technology and comfort, where convenience is at a premium and we rarely have to get out of our seat to perform a task, keeping in shape requires individual committment and dedication. That’s the bad new. The good news is that it can be done.

Ideally, everybody needs to work out regularly, but only thirty percent of the adults in America work out for the recommended amount of time each week, and almost a quarter do no activity at all.

Many people blame this lack of mobility and obesity for the increase in cases of type 2 diabetes in the United States, because these characteristics have been proven to lead to many of the chemical causes of diabetes and other related conditions.

Even though it is difficult, it is always possible to begin exercising, and working out (coupled with an improved diet) is the best way to keep away these diseases. For the individuals who are already at risk for diabetes or heart disease, regular activity and working out will strength your body and its processes like regulating insulin, staving on the beginnings of heart disease, and bringing your weight down.

In 2003, a famous journal of research and medicine printed an article about a study that showed that when individuals don’t exercise, they more likely to be obese and subsequently at risk for a number of serious illnesses.

Therefore, it is essential for individuals to exercise and keep their bodies physically fit so as to avoid developing these life-threatening illnesses.

The first thing a person should do if they are planning on going from completely immobile to an exercise-aholic is to speak with your physician or physical trainer.

If your heart has had problems in the past, your physician might want to do some tests to determine an appropriate rate that you should exercise at.

Other symptoms of other illnesses may also prevent you from certain exercises or levels of activity. Certainly highly stressful exercises and regiments may potentially put people with diabetic retinopathy in danger because they may do more damage to their blood vessels and possibly detach their retina in the eye.

Many people also suggest that individuals with advanced peripheral neuropathy or PN might not perform activities that put a lot of pressure on their feet like long distance running or some aerobic activity and otherwise decide to take up less stressful activities such as swimming.

If you have existing conditions that prevent you from doing certain exercisies, your doctor could send you to see an exercise physiologist who draw out an exercise regiment that will fit your needs and your disabilities.

Even if you have already begun your regiment and are in good enough shape already, it wouldn’t hurt to bring up your regiment with your doctor and see if he has any concerns or suggestions.

The truth is that your exercise regiment should not consume your entire life and should be flexible enough for you to enjoy it and find it interesting. Your exercise activity doesn’t necessarily have to be jogging or lifting weights. The important thing to remember is that activitiy is key, so simple things such as walking in your neighborhood is helpful.

Even as you begin your exercise regiment, remember to also look at your food choices, as no good exercise regiment will produce the results you want unless you’re willing to do the work on the nutrition end.

Living an active life is essential for the overall health of your body. Working out and getting healthy is not just for people who need to lose weight. Everybody can benefit from a healthy lifestyle.

Simple activities such as baseball, football, soccer, and basketball with friends are all good examples of healthy activities but if you want to develop muscles and look fit and trim, you have got to start going to the gym and lifting weights.

There are three basic reasons for working out;

First of all, a person thinks they could lose a few pounds and to lose weight, you must work out in the gym and go on a diet.

Secondly, an individual may think they are underweight and they could stand to pack on a few pounds of muscle. In order to do this, they must eat more and get to the gym to pump iron.

Finally, a person can go to the gym to have fun and see how far they can push their bodies.

Any good exercise regiment will include both aerobic and anaerobic exercises. This type of regiment will burn calories, increase the efficiency of essential systems and processes, and help lose weight and tone your muscles at the same time.

Before undertaking any form of exercise program, it is wise to consult a doctor and make sure you’re healthy enough to continue.

Undertaking an exercise regiment is beneficial for a few reasons;

1. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle include diet and exercise helps prevent illness as well as prolonging life in an individual’s older years.

2. Research has proven individuals have a higher level of confidence as well as feel a greater level of happiness when they exercise regularly and it can help an individual avoid falling into depression.

3. An individual who leads an active life can expect to live longer than a person who is not as active.

If you are not used to working out every day, you should begin to enter into your program at a slow rate. You will not be automatically in shape the first day you work out, and you should expect it to take some time to build up a large amount of stamina.

Do not neglect your diet as it is one of the most important factors of getting into shape.

If you have access to a nutritionist or some other health care professional who specializes in diet, ask them to suggest a food plan for you. They should first start by evaluating your present lifestyle and your current state of fitness.

After you have weighed all your dieting options, you should decide on one that contains a plan of what to eat and a workout routine that doesn’t involve the purchase of advanced nutrional supplements or powders, but still fits you as a person.

Proper diets make room for all of the food groups to ensure a balanced intake of nutrients.

A proper diet is made up of two elements. One of those elements is carbs. Many of the essentials can be garnered from eating starches such as potatoes. Fruits and vegetables are probably better sources, but are more expensive. They contain other minerals as well, but grains and oats will do nicely.

The other element of a balanced diet are fats which are either monosaturated or polysaturated food items and not fat from meat. Because eating fats involves twice the calories as other foods, eat this in moderation in order to avoid adding unwanted weight.

Moreover, if you really want to be healthy, you should refrain from alcohol or tobacco. It is common knowledge that tobacco products lead to cancer and other illnesses, and excessive alcohol consumption has been proven to involve the same dangers.

If you don’t smoke yourself, be mindful of secondhand smoke as it has shown to be just as dangerous to a person’s health.

In our always on the go world it can be nearly impossible to work out as often as you like. Because we are all so busy, our health and fitness is often not a priority as it should be. Even though it is difficult to find the time, the truth is that exercising is exactly the right medicine that our body needs to release our stress and relax our minds.

The benefits of diet and exercise are often seen by using the proper techniques, the correct exercise, cardiovascular fitness, a strict diet, variety, and the ability to motivate yourself for the long run. Anything worth achieving takes time!

Proper technique and efficient for is required to properly exercise each of the muscle groups in your body. Using proper techniques will allow your muscles to achieve the maximum work for the time you have alloted. Weight training, otherwise known by the name of resistance training, is most efficient and effective when you do not use any momentum to move weights, but only your own muscle.

Another important factor in effectiveness of your exercises is reaching the full range of motion. Full range of motion allows the muscles to flex properly and stretch the tendons to where they need to be. The objective is to build strength in your ligaments and joints by using your muscles.

The speed at which you move your weights (known as cadence) is also an important factor in effective weight training. The best form of cadence would be slow motion, as it gives each of the muscles you’re working the maximum amount of time worked. Changing up your cadence, such as using alternating between quick movements and slow movements, is also an effective method.

It is also important to correctly position your body and muscles in such a way to avoid injury and to isolate the muscle group in which you’re intending to work.

To exercise your core and abdominal region, you should employ some sort of exercise that uses the same motion or idea that you are trying to exercise for. As an example, a construction worker must lift certain things every day. Functional exercise would require him to perform certin exercises that will assist him in his daily work.

The abdominal muscles and the core act as a stabilizer for your back and body, while chest and arm muscles do the heavy lifting. These types of workouts will not only assist you during your daily life, they will prove to be interesting and will help avoid becoming bored in the gym.

Cardiovascular exercise is important in that it strengthens your heart muscle and increases the effeciency of your body’s circulatory system. Burning calories is also an important part of your fitness regiment.

Cardiovascular exercise helps clean out the body and allows your immune system to better prepare to fight infection. Working out your muscles helps the immune system clean your body of dead cells while making room for new ones.

Before the workout, a warm up exercise is necessary and will help avoid injury. You should always take a few minutes before each intensive workout to prepare your body for the stress it is about to go through. Stretching is probably the most well known and important warm-ups, and you risk serious injury if you fail to stretch your muscles.

Most people like to focus primarily on cardio fitness. You shouldn’t lift weights everyday, as this will actually inhibit growth in strength. You should alternate your cardio days with your weight lifting days to ensure variety. Although it might seem difficult to find the time to work out everyday, it is essential to do so so that your body is well-prepared for anything it may encounter, or just ready to live a long, healthy life.

Here are a few basic tips specifically for women to stay trim and looking-good:

1. In order to keep yourself fit and looking good, you must make a committment to good nutrition. You should keep in mind what weight is proper for your age and body type. Ask your physician for his suggestions on a food plan and strictly observe his diet recommendations. When you feel like you need to drop some weight, make sure that you skip food choices that are high in calories or fats. You should start substituting some of the junk food your family likes for some healthier items with lower fats and sugars.

2. Make sure to keep yourself well hydrated. It is recommended that you drink more than 8 glasses of water per day to restore hydration. It is helpful for cleaning you body of harmful chemicals. Women who are breastfeeding should also up their water drinking in order to restore lost fluids.

3. Vitamins, noteably calcium, is essential to a woman’s health. Women should take a calcium supplement no matter their age. Calcium supplements are shown to lessen cramps and other womanly discomforts. Calcium wards off osteoperosis as well, and Vitamin E helps the immune system fight illness. During menopause, women would do well to take vitamin E-400 to fight night sweats and crows feet around an aging woman’s mouth as well as hot flashes.

4. Smoking cigarettes is enormously harmful to a woman’s fitness. Women who are carrying child should never smoke or even be around second-hand smoke. Carcinogens and other dangerous chemicals are transmitted to the baby when the mother is around cigarette smoke. Women who smoke have been shown to be at higher risk than their male counterparts to get terminal illness. Smoking has also been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer

5. Exercising every day is important to the upkeep of a woman’s body. Exercise can be as simple as a walk or games with the children. Even though it seems small, this amount of activity is helpful to your health. These types of exercises are extremely helpful as any mother with children knows how difficult it could be to make time to get to the gym. Other useful exercise programs can be based around a pilates regiment, or any of a number of alternative programs. These also help in warding off heart disease in the future.

6. Don’t fall into the trap of being stressed all the time. Stress is a poison to the body and can actually contribute to getting sick. It is important to take time to yourself to relax. Reading books, re-connecting with friends, or going shopping can always take your mind off things. Sleep is also encompassed in relaxing, so don’t neglect a good night’s sleep.

7. The sun can do a massive amount of damage to the skin of your body, so make sure to protect yourself with sunscreen. The sun can be very bad for your skin, so even hats are very effective at protecting you. Skin cancer is a common consequence of exessive sunlight. It also ages a woman’s skin rapidly and makes wrinkles appear much earlier.

8. Part of a woman’s beauty is her smile, so be sure to get to know your dentist. Keep your teeth clean and your face and body will love you for it.

9. Also get to know your gynecologist. If you are over the age of 18, you should get an annual screening, most importantly for a Pap Smear. If you are over the age of 40, you should visit a doctor to have a mammogram, and you should also make it a regular thing to perform a self-breast exam to do your part in keeping yourself healthy!

10. Practice only safe sex. Condoms should always been worn, and you should explore other methods of birth control.

Top Diets to Lose Weight the Healthy Way in 2009

As we approach another New Year, many people are crafting an entirely new set of weight loss resolutions for this coming year. Looking back at 2008, it’s important to take a holistic approach to health by selecting all-natural diets which provide a complete set of health benefits. We consulted with some leading nutrition experts to bring you the top all-natural diets for 2009:

The South Beach Diet

Formulated by leading American cardiologist Arthur Agatston, the South Beach Diet revolutionized weight loss in Miami, Florida before becoming a global phenomenon the last few years. Unlike many other diets, the South Beach method is backed by clinical studies and is entirely-natural: your overall health will improve on the diet by helping to stabilize your blood sugar as you limit the “bad” sugars and fats in your diet. While this method may seem unsurprising, the unique menu in each phase helps to provide complete nutrition, so you restore your health while losing weight the all-natural way.

Mediterranean Diet

Based upon culinary trends in Mediterranean countries such as Italy, the diet is surprisingly delicious and is a great way to transition to a healthier lifestyle. Based upon the staples of the regional diet including whole wheat noodles, olive oil, red wine and green vegetables, the meals can be quite enjoyable and provide a great menu selection for social events. Leading research institutions including British Journal of Medicine have shown a number of benefits from the diet, which go well beyond weight loss.

The Perricone Super Food Diet

You’ve likely heard of “super foods” but incorporating them into your daily meals may seem difficult. With the vast number of foods that qualify in this category, however, there are a number of opportunities to infuse each meal with ingredients from the list, including blueberries, green tea and spinach. Starting off the day with a cup of tea, some whole wheat toast and fresh fruit with yogurt can get you started on the right foot, and ensuring proper intake of green, leafy vegetables for dinner and lunch will only elevate your health profile. Leading researchers, such as Dr. Perricone from the University of Maryland, have advocated a super food rich diet to help improve heart health while improving mental and physical well-being. The doctor’s list of super foods includes many surprises ranging from lentils to hot peppers and nuts, many of which you probably already enjoy on a daily basis.

Many people mistakenly believe that obesity is associated with a total lack of will to overcome the urge to overeat. Some people are overweight or beyond overweight because they can’t resist the temptation to eat junk food and other similar items. And people stay in that size because they don’t have the will to religiously follow weight loss programs and diet plans. What’s worse is that some associate weight loss surgery as a quick way out – another manifestation of a lack of will.

This may be true but not in the general sense. It may apply to some but not all cases of obesity. What’s more applicable is the contention that a person suffering from obesity cannot go through weight loss programs on his own even when his life depended on them. Personal drive may be a big influence but it cannot motivate a person on its own.

Going through surgery is also a major choice. In most cases, it’s usually the doctor’s call whether or not to prescribe gastric bypass as a mode of treatment. Not only will the procedure require financial preparations, it will also entail emotional conditioning due to the lifestyle changes that it will cause.

And the changes are going to be drastic. Food intake is going to be limited. For the next couple of months after surgery, the patient is going to be compelled to take in only fluids. He will have to be trained how to eat slower. He has to go through a different way of life that is a lot different from how he lived before even when he was going through various weight loss programs.

This is why a support group is especially important for people who have gone through weight reduction surgery. Life after surgery is going to be a lot different so it’s going to take a lot to overcome the stress that change may cause.

Support groups for these patients usually work to help them cope emotionally with the challenges of weight reduction surgery and life after that. If you’re about to go through weight reduction surgery, it’s advisable to start joining these support groups. They can set proper expectations on what you’re about to go through after the procedure. These groups are usually composed of patients who have gone through the same surgery in the past so they know more than anyone else exactly what you’re about to go through. They can tell you their own stories so you are more prepared about the whole new life that you’re going to lead after you get your stomach reduced.

After surgery, it’s only normal to go through a phase of depression because of a seeming deprivation from the food that you used to enjoy eating. Being in the company of people who understand you and who are on the same boat will help you overcome the emotional stresses attached to the treatment. These people can even give you helpful tips on how to go through each day and make the whole ordeal as manageable as possible.

Surveys show that more than thirty percent of the United States’ population is suffering from obesity. This is in spite of the many fad diets, exercise programs and weight reduction techniques that are available in the market. Because morbid obesity is a life-threatening conditions, doctors seek to identify effective treatments for the problem. When all else fails, they usually prescribe gastric bypass surgery.

Gastric bypass is essentially a broad classification of various procedures that are aimed at treating morbid obesity. It works to jump start a weight loss program so results are manifested at the soonest possible time. This is usually administered in cases where in time is of the essence and it’s important that the patient lost weight as soon as possible to prevent further complications of other health conditions.

Mini gastric bypass is just one of the many types of gastric bypass being administered today. It’s also the most popular because it’s not as invasive as other types of weight reduction surgery. The whole procedure generally takes only 45 minutes to finish so the risks are not as great as other major operations. It’s also one of the cheapest gastric bypass surgeries available. This is why it has attracted much popularity in the recent years.

Also known as loop gastric bypass, this procedure mainly entails inserting a band around a part of the stomach pouch to staple it and reduce the volume of the pouch. The end result is there is a reduction in the amount of food that the stomach will be able to accommodate at every meal. The patient will be compelled to eat less so weight loss will almost always be certain.

To further limit the amount of food absorbed by the body, the small intestine’s opening is also reduced and a part of it is stapled as well.

As far as success rate is concerned, the numbers are promising for loop gastric bypass patients. In a recent study, it was found that an individual who weighs 300 pounds can lose an average of 140 pounds within the year following bypass. This is, of course, when surgery is supplemented by a proper diet regimen after it.

If there’s one thing that you need to take note of when it comes to mini gastric bypass, it’s the fact that it may not be applicable for every health concern. Just because you are suffering from obesity doesn’t necessarily make you eligible for the procedure. Certain criteria must be met before a doctor can prescribe this mode of treatment. For starters, this is only a court of last resort. As earlier mentioned, any type of gastric bypass surgery is meant to be performed only when the patient has gone through every which possible type of weight loss program and they are not eliciting the expected results. Also, if you’re suffering from certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or collagen vascular disease, you may not be able to go through this particular surgery. You also need to have a clean history of drug and alcohol use.

Weight loss surgery is generally prescribed when typical weight reduction techniques such as diets and fitness programs are not eliciting the expected results. It is usually seen as providing the patient a good head start in his weight loss program because after surgery, he is left with no other choice but to limit his food intake and follow prescribed diet programs religiously.

Surveys show that more than thirty percent of the population of the United States is suffering from obesity. This is probably why there has been an increase in the demand for weight reduction surgery procedures. The promise of effective weight loss has people growing more attracted to surgery in spite of the potential health risks attached to it.

The problem is, while surgery can prove to be effective in helping you lose weight, you need to understand that this procedure can take a huge chunk of your bank account. You will need to fork over a few thousand of dollars to go under the knife and the expenses are not limited to the actual procedure alone. There are the doctor’s fees, pre-consults, ongoing medications and the odd little detail that is associated with the treatment. This being the case, you want to prepare yourself not only emotionally but also financially as well.

There are a lot of weight loss surgery procedures being administered these days and more techniques are expected to be developed in the coming years. How much you need to spend to lose weight mainly depends on the type of procedure that you have to undergo. As a general rule, the more complicated the surgery technique is, the higher the cost. Your bill will include doctor’s fees, anesthesia, pre-consults, post-surgery consults and hospital expenses to name a few. Major surgeries will normally cost more.

An average gastric bypass can cost you anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000. But that’s only on the average. Many surgical procedures cost a whopping $40,000 inclusive of all other medical bills. Prices will, of course, differ across the surgical facilities offering weight reduction surgery. These are only rough estimates. There are states where you can get surgery for less. Understandably, if a facility is renowned or if it comes with a good record of successful operations, it may charge a higher rate.

Should you consider going out of the country for weight reduction surgery, you may find yourself saving as much as fifty percent on your medical bills. But the savings may just be allocated for other expenses such as the cost of going to that country – plane tickets, hotel reservations, etcetera.

The numbers may be overwhelming but there are ways to ease the burden of paying for such an exorbitant fee. For starters, you may want to check with your insurance provider if the company can shoulder your medical bills as part of your coverage. Most insurance providers are now willing to provide assistance for this operation because they stand to gain more by helping their clients be healthier. Make sure to verify the details of your health plan to ensure that you’re eligible for support.

If your doctor has already prescribed surgery as a part of your weight loss treatment, you want to prepare yourself both emotionally and financially for this particular step. Surgery is going to bring forth a lot of drastic changes in your lifestyle. You will be compelled to eat less and be more mindful of your food choices. You will have to go through a proper exercise regimen that you will be expected to follow religiously. And, you will have to spend a lot.

Even when you have health insurance to finance a huge chunk of your medical bills, you will still find yourself taking a substantial amount from your own budget for the odd little detail associated with this treatment. Besides, not all insurance providers will be more than glad to shoulder the full cost of going through weight loss treatment.

Because of the possible exorbitant expense that will be incurred due to weight loss surgery, many people are looking for cost-effective alternatives especially if surgery really is in order. One of the most popular solutions that many are considering include flying out of the country and going to other parts of the world where surgery is cheaper. Recent surveys found that more and more people are going out of the country and flying to other places such as Thailand, India and Singapore for their weight reduction surgeries. These are just three of the many countries that have been actively promoting medical tourism (where weight loss procedures are offered) during the past few years. People are visiting these countries not to learn about their culture or explore scenic spots but to visit sterile medical facilities where they can get the treatment that they need to lose the excess pounds from their bodies.

Recent studies show that more people are growing interested over the prospect of getting weight loss surgery abroad. This is mainly to cut down the expense that they can incur if they got under the knife in the United States or in their home countries. According to surveys, the cost of weight reduction surgery in countries like India and Thailand appear to be fifty percent less than that of the same procedures performed in First World nations such as the US.

Going out of the country lets you avail of cheaper surgery and medical attention without sacrificing your safety.

But just a word of caution. You still need to be careful about where you choose to get your surgery. Going abroad for weight reduction surgery may sound like a good idea but only if it comes with the right amount of research. The practice of flying out of the country for major operations is still a subject of heated debate mainly due to the safety issues surrounding it. There’s the difference in health systems and medical protocols that the patient has to contend with. Before you decide to go for weight reduction surgery in another country, you want to know more about the procedures and take the time to find out about the more established medical institutions in that country. It would also help if you inquired with your insurance provider about the possibility of offering assistance for weight loss surgery if you’re going to get it abroad.

Obesity is a prevalent health problem that is experienced by millions of people all over the world. In the United States alone, more than thirty percent of the country’s population is suffering from obesity. These days, the struggle to lose weight is not only driven by vanity or the need to look physically better. Weight loss for many people has become a requirement if they want to improve their health.

This is why weight reduction procedures have become so popular. Many will go through great lengths to lose the excess weight. There are fad diets, exercise programs, and holistic treatments that are geared towards helping people gain a healthier body. And then there’s surgery for those who have tried everything but are not getting the results that they need.

Everyone knows weight reduction surgery is not without risks. This is why medical science continues to work towards developing new techniques that work to minimize the common negative repercussions attached to such procedures. New weight loss surgery techniques have come out today and are starting to gain much acceptance in the industry.

Biliopancreatic diversion (BPD)

Typical gastric bypass surgery procedures entail stapling a certain part of the stomach to decrease its volume. In biliopancreatic diversion, however, the surgeon literally removes a part of the stomach to limit its capacity. What remains of the stomach is then attached near the end of the small intestine where the colon starts. This is designed to force the digestive process to bypass the small intestine where most of the food and nutrient absorption happens. This will help the patient lose weight quickly because absorption becomes really limited and most of the food that he eats is routed directly to the colon for disposal.

StomaphyX

This procedure is not as invasive as typical gastric bypass because the surgeon need not make incisions on the body to staple the stomach. In this procedure that was developed at the Mercy Medical Center in New York, a tool is inserted into the body through the mouth. The instrument is designed to adjust the stomach to make it smaller and limit the amount of food that can pass through it. The good thing about this process is that patients will be able to recover faster because they don’t have surgical wounds to deal with unlike in gastric bypass where the surgical sutures have to be tended along with other after-effects of surgery.

ROSE

This procedure was developed by specialists at the the Center for the Treatment of Obesity in UC San Diego Medical Center. This is another less invasive form of weight reduction surgery that didn’t require the surgeon to create incisions to reduce the size of the gastric pouch.

ROSE stands for restorative obesity surgery endolumental. In this technique, an instrument is inserted through the mouth, much like what is done with StomaphyX. In ROSE, however, the opening of the small intestine from the stomach is also reduced to further limit the amount of food and calories absorbed by the body. With this procedure, the risk of acquiring surgery-associated infections is also minimized.

Gastric bypass surgery will result in a reduced stomach size. The procedure entails literally stapling your stomach so that it becomes smaller. Logically, a smaller stomach means more limited food intake. You are compelled to take food in minimal amounts because your original consumption will not fit into your new stomach anymore.

But in spite of the smaller stomach size, you have to be careful about your health and take care about eating the right kind of food to keep your body nourished. Going through weight loss surgery will warrant some major changes in your diet mainly to help your body grow accustomed to the limited amount that you are able to take in at every meal.

After going through surgery, your doctor will refer you to a nutritionist or dietitian who will in turn prescribe a meal diet according to your new condition. You have to follow his advice if you want to ensure that you achieve substantial weight loss. Otherwise, you’re defeating the purpose of weight loss surgery and the thousands of dollars that you have just spent and will spend on it.

Purely liquids

Immediately after surgery, you will not be allowed to eat anything yet. The doctor will prescribe a gradual re-introduction of food substances into your stomach. You will start your food intake through liquids. During the first three months after your gastric bypass you will probably start by drinking juices, broth and pureed foods. Gradually, your meals will include soft solids or those that are easier to chew and digest. Expect to eat small meals and at increased frequencies during the day. The dietitian may suggest high protein meals to help your body recover quickly.

How you eat

After weight loss surgery, you need to learn how to eat slowly. Your original eating habits before going under the knife will have to be junked and replaced by healthier and safer food choices. It’s also important that you learned how to listen to your body – that is, you have to be able to stop before your stomach is completely full. You can’t afford to overeat because your stomach will only be able to take so much food now and you want it to be able to efficiently digest what you take in.

Food choices

Your food choices will also have to take a turn for the better as you gear away from fatty and sweet foods. You’ll have to start saying goodbye to the bad foods that you were used to eating before. It’s not simply a matter of cutting down on these types of food. You have to totally remove them from your fridge…

And your cupboard, and you secret stash of junk food under your bed, and the secret secret container that you keep in one corner of your room.

In other words, you have to start thinking healthy and eating healthy.

Vitamins and supplements

Since your food intake is limited now, you want to make sure that you’re still properly nourished. Taking vitamin and mineral supplements will help ensure that your body still gets the right amount of nutrition that you need to get through your day even when you can’t take in the recommended amount of food because of your stomach.

Weight loss surgery is not the end all be all of obesity treatment. Just because you went under the knife doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re already going to lose weight effortlessly. If anything, this is just the start of a whole new journey towards gaining a healthier body. There’s still much that needs to be done. You’re going to lose weight but only if you work for it. Weight loss surgery will just give you that much-needed push in the right direction.

You want to be emotionally and physically prepared for the fact that your life is going to permanently change after surgery. You will be on your way to losing weight mainly because weight loss surgery jump starts a series of lifestyle changes that you will be compelled to make.

Diet

For starters, expect that you’re going to have to work with a different diet regimen now that your stomach is smaller. As you well know, gastric bypass limits your stomach’s ability to hold food for a particular duration. With your smaller stomach, you can only eat lesser food than what you have consumed before.

During the first few days after surgery, you wouldn’t be able to eat solid food yet. Re-introducing food into your body will start through fluid intake. Gradually, you will start taking solids but everything should be done in small steps. Your doctor will probably get you in touch with a nutritionist to help you plan your meals to make sure that you’re still getting proper nourishment.

Support mechanisms

Lifestyle changes can cause a lot of stress on your part. For starters, you’ll probably start feeling bad over the fact that you can’t eat the same types of food that you enjoyed before you had your stomach stapled. It’s only natural to feel depressed over this and the best way to cope is to join support groups or go through regular counseling so you can be in the company of people who understand what you have to deal with. Changes can be overwhelming especially those that are as drastic as this one. Joining support groups or seeking the help and guidance of your family and friends can bring a renewed strength to be braver in the face of these changes.

Your work

You will probably be able to go back to your normal work schedule in a few weeks depending on how fast your body can adapt to the changes that weight loss surgery has caused. For more complicated operations such as gastric bypass, patients are usually advised to take it easy for at least six weeks before they go back to work or school full time.

Healthier lifestyle

As earlier mentioned, you will need to make a lot of changes with regards to your food intake. But your weight loss regimen is not only limited to meal changes. You want to start being more active as well. Exercise will have to be gradually incorporated into your daily fitness routine. You have to tone your body as it loses the excess fat through your limited food intake.

A week after surgery, you will probably have to start working out. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to start hitting the gym already. You can begin with afternoon walks at the park and then gradually, you can increase your activity until you’re already into a full-blown fitness regimen.

Weight loss surgery has been attracting much popularity for the past few years as people are starting to grow more concerned over the threats of morbid obesity. Doctors generally prescribe surgery only when other modes of treatments have already been tried and they haven’t been able to affect substantial weight loss on the patient.

Gastric bypass and similar procedures that work to help in weight loss are classified under major surgeries. As such, you need to understand that there are certain risks involved in going through it. This being the case, you want to be careful in your choice of facility that will administer your treatment. The right choice can help minimize the possibility of the safety risks.

Talking to your doctor

Your logical first stop in your search for a suitable weight loss surgery center is your doctor. He should be able to refer you to a reputable facility as soon as he prescribes surgery as treatment for your weight issue. Ideally, he will also be able to refer you to a surgeon who can handle your case if he is not trained for gastric bypass or whatever surgical procedure you’re going to get.

And while you’re at it, you also want to know more about the surgical procedure that he has prescribed. Understanding the intricacies of the procedure will also help you narrow down your choices to those that specialize in that particular type of surgery.

Research

It also helps to know more about the industry before you decide to go under the knife. You will find that the internet is full of resources that you can read up on to learn more about the surgical procedure and about the choices that you have as far as medical facilities are concerned. It’s also a good idea to visit user forums so you’ll know what other people have tried and where they have gotten their surgery.

Most cosmetic surgery facilities also have online websites. You can look up the medical facility you’re considering and get more information on its services through its site. This information will help you decide whether or not the facility’s policies will serve you best interests.

What else to consider

There are a couple things that can influence your choice of weight loss surgery facility. For starters, you want to consider centers that are located within your area, unless you’re considering on getting surgery abroad. Remember that weight loss surgery will also entail consultations both before and after the procedure so expect to be traveling back to the facility even after you have been discharged.

It’s also good to check the track record of the attending surgeon. You want to be under a specialist that comes with a record of successful operations. This is to make sure that you have a better chance of still coming out without incurring a lot of side effects. The center should also have to provide after-surgery assistance because you would need a lot of help later on when you have to go through lifestyle changes to adjust to your new stomach.

Obesity is considered a life-threatening condition that can greatly influence an individual’s ability to go through his daily tasks efficiently. This is why weight loss surgery programs are so important. As part of weight loss treatments, they serve to provide the patient with a good head start towards achieving a healthier body.

Gastric bypass surgery and other weight loss surgery procedures are usually prescribed when all other techniques have failed to elicit substantial weight loss for the individual. They are not usually the first resolution that doctors offer because of the risks that are associated with them. As much as possible, physicians choose to have their patients try dieting and exercise as well as other medications first before advising them to go under the knife.

Besides, weight loss surgery means incurring a huge expense on the part of the patient. You have to be financially prepared for this treatment because you’re going to find yourself spending a lot of money on it. If you don’t have the budget of a millionaire, you may be wondering if there is any way you can get this surgery for free.

The answer is no, you can’t. But you do have a lot of options that you can explore on how to make the financial burden lighter.

Insurance

The first step in looking for funding for weight loss surgery is consulting your insurance provider. If you have medical insurance, you want to check out the coverage of your health plan and verify if weight loss surgery is covered.

Most states require insurance providers to cover weight loss surgery especially for the treatment of obesity. Generally, insurance providers can either pay for the full cost of the treatment or at least a larger percentage of your expenses. Given that surgery is covered in your health plan, the provider may shoulder the cost of doctor’s fees, after-surgery medications and hospital bills as well. Make inquiries with your particular insurance provider so you understand the provisions of your health plan.

In case you’re lucky enough to have medical insurance that covers weight loss surgery, you will need to prepare the necessary paperwork to apply for funding. For starters, you’ll probably need recommendations coming from your doctor and the surgeon who will take your case. Most insurance plans require that you seek treatment with an affiliated hospital and surgeon so you want to be open to the possibility that you may have to be looked after by another doctor especially if your current physician is not affiliated with your provider.

Expect that your provider will require you to prove that you meet all the set criteria for being eligible for coverage. Being obese doesn’t necessarily translate to eligibility for weight loss surgery. Your provider will probably base his criteria on the ones that were set by the US National Institutes for Health regarding this matter. In a nutshell, you need to reach a certain BMI (body mass index) threshold and your doctor should inform the provider that you have tried every sort of procedure to lose weight but they are all ineffective.

If you’re looking into undergoing weight loss surgery to lose the excess fat from your body, you want to brace yourself for the expense that you’re going to incur. Expenditures are not only limited to the cost of getting surgery itself. You will need to add in pre-consults, tests, after-surgery consultations, therapy and succeeding medications among others. Suffice to say, this procedure is going to create a huge dent on your bank account.

The figures

Gastric bypass surgery can cost you about $25,000, on the average. The surgical procedure that you have to undergo will greatly influence how much you’ll have to shell out. The more complicated it is, the bigger the expense. There are procedures that will compel you to come up with $10,000 excluding before and after-surgery consults and you’ll probably find cheaper services in other parts of the world if you’re considering on getting your surgery abroad.

Self-payment

Because weight loss surgery is pretty much in demand these days, hospitals and cosmetic surgery centers that offer these services usually come out with payment plans to help ease the burden of spending a lot on the treatment. These plans generally entail installment payments for the whole program. For instance, you only get to fork over a particular percentage of the whole cost each time you go for a consult. You’ll probably have to provide some sort of downpayment but it’s not going to be as big as having to pay for the whole treatment in one fell swoop.

If you’re considering self-payment options for funding your weight loss surgery, you want to ask your surgery center or hospital about your options. Your doctor may be able to help you out on this. He can get you referred to the hospital where he is affiliated for funding support.

Taking out a loan

Following the self-payment option, another way to finance your weight loss surgery and treatment is by taking out a loan from an established provider. Your loan may come from your credit card or from a mortgage that you take against a piece of property as collateral. Just a word of caution, though. These loans can come with higher interest rates and extra charges so make sure that you understand the intricacies of this type of financing before you go through it. In most cases, going through surgery is a way to be more financially productive, enabling you to pay off your bills because you’re in a better state of health. But if it would take time before you have recovered enough to start earning your income again, you may find yourself forced to pay off your loan before you have even managed to get back to work.

Insurance

Your health insurance can also cover the cost of surgery provided that it is under the provisions of your coverage. Before you consider any other option, it’s but logical to consult your insurance provider about financing options from them. Many states in the US require providers to provide support for weight loss surgery as a treatment for obesity. This is because the government has already established that obesity is a life-threatening ailment that has to be addressed to allow the individual to be more efficient.

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you know that the “losing” part is just the first half of the battle. Maintaining weight loss - keeping the weight off after you’ve lost it - is one of life’s great challenges. In this article we’ll show you three tips that you can use to assist with losing weight and keeping that lost weight off permanently.

Tip 1: Eat what you want (in moderation): Most people believe that losing weight and maintaining weight loss is an act of will power and avoiding certain foods, and for some this is partially true. However, the quickest way to fail at maintaining weight loss is to completely avoid foods that you enjoy eating. Always resisting temptation will cause negative feelings and thoughts about your changes in diet, but can be avoided by employing a “cheat day”. Having a cheat day will help with satisfying food cravings and eliminating the need to have comfort foods on a regular basis.

If you find yourself regularly craving ice cream, have a regular day each week where you treat yourself to some. Don’t overdo the “cheating” - ensure that it’s only one day of seven and that you stick to eating healthily for the remainder of the week.

Tip 2: Don’t fight the math: To lose weight, you need to consume fewer calories per day in food than you are expending in energy to run your body. The math behind this is brutal, but in general it helps to know that 3500 calories equal one pound, and one mile jogged equals 100 calories burned. For every 3500 calories you take in that you don’t burn off, you will gain a pound of weight. For every 3500 calories that you burn through exercise that you don’t replace with food, you will lose a pound of weight.

Remember not to fight the math when setting your weight loss goals. This means that if you’re looking to lose five pounds in three weeks, you will need consume around 18,000 fewer calories, or burn them off through additional exercise. The math here shows that this is around 850 calories a day, which at 8.5 miles of jogging a day can be unrealistic for many!

Tip 3: Clandestine calorie burning: If you’ve ever had friends that are athletes or known a marathon runner, you have probably wondered at some point how they don’t just shrivel up and disappear. It seems almost improbable that someone can do such a huge amount of physical activity without constantly losing weight!

As the body gets accustomed to doing an activity such as jogging regularly, it gets more efficient at using the energy required to perform the activity. Over time, the energy in calories the body requires to perform the activity decreases. One of the ways to get around this is to sneak in irregular calorie-burning episodes to surprise your body’s rhythms. For instance, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking a mile from work and walking in, and carrying the groceries by hand to the car might not seem like much work, but you will burn thousands of additional calories per year just by adding simple activities like this to your routine.

Remembering these simple tips will help you lose weight and keep the lost weight from creeping back over time.

Good luck!
